HC Deb 28 April 1998 vol 311 c96W
Mr. Clappison

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to establish additional immigration detention centres; and what estimate he has made of the number of places thereby created. [39390]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons was recently critical of the limited space available to the Immigration Service in detention centres and suggested that the Immigration Service needs to expand its detention estate. This proposal is being examined as part of the Detention Review which will report in due course.

Mr. Clappison

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans he has to change the criteria for holding asylum seekers and illegal entrants in detention. [39391]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

The recently completed detention review covered all aspects of detention policy, including detention criteria. Evaluation of the review is now in the final stages and the results are expected to be made available in due course.
