HC Deb 28 April 1998 vol 311 cc89-90W
Sir Alastair Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what progress has been made in discussions on aid debt cancellation programmes with potentially eligible Commonwealth countries; and if she will make a statement. [39960]

Mr. Foulkes

Cancellation programmes have been agreed with Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Mauritius, St. Lucia, Tonga, Turks and Caicos and Jamaica. We have also opened discussions with five other countries about their commitment to poverty eradication in the framework of the international development strategy; and the extent to which they are actively pursuing policies which promote responsive and accountable government, which encourage transparency and bear down on corruption, and are applying economic policies which encourage sustainable economic development.
