HC Deb 28 April 1998 vol 311 cc97-8W
Mrs. May

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list budgeted expenditure on closed circuit television cameras for 1998–99 by(a) local authority and (b) police region. [39880]

Mr. Michael

[holding answer 27 April 1998]: It is not possible to provide the details requested. Closed circuit television (CCTV) is funded in a variety of different ways: some local authorities and local partnership groups have financed schemes directly for their area while others have involved an element of Central Government grant. As far as the Home Office budget is concerned, £9 million is available in 1998–99 to support the development of CCTV schemes. At least £1 million will be made available through round 4 of the CCTV Challenge Competition. The bids made under round 4 are currently being assessed and we hope to announce the results in May.
