HC Deb 24 April 1998 vol 310 c712W
Mr. Barry Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on prospects for the tourism industry. [39431]

Mr. Hain

Tourism in Wales has enjoyed particular success in recent years and prospects look good for the future.

It is estimated that in 1997 spend by tourists in Wales will total £1.9 billion including £234 million from overseas tourists.

The European summit in June and the Rugby World Cup in 1999 provide further opportunities to raise the profile of Wales world-wide. The Wales Tourist Board in collaboration with other agencies and the Tourism Industry itself is working to ensure that Wales derives maximum benefit from these events.
