HL Deb 21 April 1998 vol 588 cc200-1WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they intend to table at the United Nations Human Rights Commission a resolution on Iran; if so, whether, in relation to drafting such a resolution, they have seen the so far unpublished report by the rapporteur on Iran, Professor Maurice Copithorne, or any of the reports of the thematic rapporteurs so far as they concern Iran; whether any such resolution will mention the silencing of dissident clerics, such as Grand Ayatollah al-Imam al-Seyyed Muhammad al-Shirazi, and their followers; and whether they have shown a draft of such a resolution to representatives of the Iranian Government. [HL1374]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Symons of Vernham Dean)

As in previous years, the European Union will sponsor a resolution on Iran at the Commission on Human Rights. The report of the UN Special Representative on Iran has now been issued, and the resolution will reflect it and other available information. The draft resolution is still the subject of discussion with EU partners in Geneva.
