HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c409W
Sir Alastair Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what is the estimated cost of her Department's support for the pilot land reform programme in the Republic of South Africa. [39179]

Clare Short

We have been assisting the Republic of South Africa with its land reform programme since 1995. Our support aims to help them to devise and test efficient, equitable and replicable means of transferring land to the rural poor. The expenditure for this pilot programme amounted to around £2 million to March 1998, and we expect to spend in total over £5 million over the next two years. The EU has also committed over £6 million to the programme, to which Britain's contribution is approximately 15 per cent.
