HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c462W
Mr. Sarwar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what action he is taking to improve facilities for sport in schools. [39173]

Mr. Galbraith

The provision of facilities for sport in schools is a matter for local authorities. The Government have, however, recently announced tighter planning controls on the use of playing fields for development to ensure that wherever possible sports facilities are retained for use by the local school and community. In addition the Scottish Sports Council has allocated over £3.5 million through the National Lottery to sports projects in schools.
