Mr. Baker

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what were the conclusions of the investigation into the recent railway accident at Glynde station; and what action has been taken subsequently. [38714]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The conclusions of the Health and Safety Executive's Railway Inspectorate investigation into the accident at Glynde Railway Station, East Sussex on 20 April 1997 were that serious breaches of health and safety legislation had taken place, resulting in the prosecution of Amec Rail Ltd.

On 4 November 1997, Amec Rail Ltd. pleaded guilty to two charges: failing to ensure the health and safety of their employees and failing to ensure the safety of persons not in their employment. Amec Rail were fined £15,000 on each charge and ordered to pay costs of £2,007.
