HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 cc435-6W
Mr. McNamara

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if she will estimate the number of existing prisoners convicted of scheduled offences remaining in prison in each year until the last is released, assuming no new convictions, under(a) the current, (b) a 66 per cent. and (c) a 75 per cent. rate of remission. [37829]

Mr. Ingram

Statistical information in the precise form requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost. I am nevertheless able to provide statistical information on a similar point which has been previously produced. The following table is based on prisoners serving determinate sentences of three years or more; held at Maghaberry or Maze for offences connected to terrorism; and who will be released after 30 April 1998.

Number of prisoners convicted of scheduled offences remaining in prison at the end of each year under current arrangements, 66% and 75% rates of remission
End of year Current arrangements 66% remission 75% remission
1998 250 109 38
1999 182 59 9
2000 126 26 3
2001 84 8 2
2002 47 2 2
2003 31 2 1
2004 18 1 -
2005 8 1 -
2006 3 1 -

Notes:

1. Current prisoners for whom 66% and 75% remission would mean prior or immediate release, are included in figures for 1998.

2. Determinate sentenced prisoners serving sentences of three years or more; held at Maghaberry or Maze for scheduled offences; and who will be released after 30 April 1998.

3. Excludes: Life Sentence prisoners and prisoners detained at Secretary of State's Pleasure; remand; and fine default prisoners.
