HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 cc408-9W
Sir Alastair Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development in which countries her Department conducted participatory poverty assessments in 1997–98; and in which it plans to in 1998–99. [39187]

Clare Short

We supported a participatory poverty assessment in 1997–98 in Kenya, and commenced work on a participatory poverty assessment in Egypt. In 1998–99 we are committed to supporting national level participatory poverty assessments in Pakistan and Uganda, and to carrying out one for urban poverty in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Work on the participatory poverty assessment in Egypt is continuing. Work on the Poverty and Inequality Report in South Africa (for which the participatory poverty assessment which we supported has been a major component) has been ongoing throughout this period.
