To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many people with multiple sclerosis who are claimants of the higher rate of the mobility component of the disability living allowance, and assessed as being(a) totally unable to walk, (b) virtually unable to walk and (c) in a condition where the exertion required to walk would constitute a danger to life or be likely to lead to a serious deterioration in health. On the basis of a 5 per cent. sample of cases at 30 November 1997, there are around 43,500 recipients of the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance whose main disabling condition is multiple sclerosis. Almost half of these are recorded as being unable or virtually unable to walk, but records do not show the grounds for awarding benefit to some claimants who previously received Mobility Allowance.

The number of claimants of Attendance Allowance who have multiple sclerosis is 4,100. This figure relates to people claiming Attendance Allowance at 30 November 1997 and is for those whose main disabling condition is multiple sclerosis.
