34. Mr. Cranston

To ask the Minister without Portfolio if he will make a statement on his plans for the educational components of the Millennium Experience. [37442]

Mr. Mandelson

The New Millennium Experience Company (NMEC) is charged with creating a Millennium Experience which is educational, inspirational, and fun. Most aspects of the Experience (both the Dome at Greenwich and the associated national programme of events and activities) will have an educational element and will support the principle of lifelong learning. Some parts of the Experience have a particular education focus—The Learning Curve and Licensed to Skill zones within the Dome will reflect the close inter-relationship of learning with the changing world of work. The national programme will provide opportunities for people to participate with educational organisations on community based local and regional learning projects. The NMEC have Education Managers in each of its twelve local offices around the country. These Managers will support and promote national programme activities and events in liaison with community groups, local authorities and local education authorities and establishments.
