HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 cc424-5W
Mr. Gordon Prentice

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what steps he is taking to arrest the rising water table in London; what impact rising water levels are having on subterranean structures; and if he will make a statement. [38747]

Angela Eagle

Thames Water plc are currently developing a strategy for alleviating groundwater levels across the area of London most likely to be affected. We expect to receive their report in about a month's time, and shall then be able to consider how to take the strategy forward. The only subterranean structures so far affected are certain parts of the Underground network. London Underground have considerable experience of dealing with groundwater and are taking action as the need arises.
