HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c427W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what proposals he has to set limits on election expenses for candidates for the London Mayoralty; and what statutory provision applies to the date on which election expenses are first incurred. [38736]

Mr. Raynsford

We said in our White Paper, "A Mayor and Assembly for London", that there will need to be a limit on the amount that candidates for the Mayor and Assembly can spend. Subject to a "Yes" vote in the referendum on 7 May we will introduce legislation to establish the Greater London Authority. The legislation will set the level of these expenses and we will consult the Association of London Government before taking decisions.

The date from which election expenses might first be incurred is not prescribed in statute.
