HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 cc533-4W
Mr. Laurence Robertson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will meet lay members of the General Synod of the Church of England to discuss the implications of the Human Rights Bill[Lords]. [38928]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

My right hon. Friend the Home Secretary has had a number of meetings about the implications of the Human Rights Bill for the Churches. These included a full discussion with the Bishop of Ripon and officials of the General Synod on 9 March. My right hon. Friend understands the strength of feeling about this issue but he does not believe that a further meeting with lay members would add significantly to the points that have been made.
