HC Deb 20 April 1998 vol 310 c414W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development how much financial aid has been donated to international funds for the protection of children in war areas in the last year. [37369]

Clare Short

It is not possible to provide separate details for our support to protection of children from our overall support to international organisations working in war areas. My support for protection work was £37.8 million (preliminary estimate) in financial year 1997/98. This funded a variety of programmes run by the International Committee of the Red Cross, United Nations Children's Fund, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UN Department for Humanitarian Affairs/Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the UN Secretary General's Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict. In addition, we have supported many projects managed by non governmental organisations who are working with vulnerable communities in war areas.
