To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many children were born to teenage mothers in the Wakefield District(a) in 1980 and (b) in the last year for which figures are available. [38281]

Letter from Tim Holt to Mr. Jon Trickett, dated 8 April 1998: As Director of the Office for National Statistics (ONS), I have been asked to reply to your question on children born to teenage mothers. The numbers of livebirths in 1980 and 1996 to mothers aged under 20 who were resident in Wakefield Metropolitan County District were as follows: 496 in 1980 360 in 1996.

The perinatal death rate per 1,000 live and stillbirths of children born to teenage mothers in 1993–1996 (combined) was (a) 11.0 in Wakefield Health Authority, and (b) 11.1 in England as a whole.
