HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 c312W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how much Government money was spent in Gwynedd on substance misuse services and prevention in each of the last three years. [37788]

Mr. Win Griffiths

North Wales Health Authority spent £392,000(i) in 1995/96, £440,000 in 1996/97 and £468,000 in 1997/98 on substance misuse services in the area of Gwynedd unitary authority.

£142,000 was spent by Gwynedd County Council on alcohol or drug misuse in 1995/96, £25,000 by Gwynedd Unitary Authority in 1996/97 and the latest budget information suggests that the authority will have spent £64,000 on drug or alcohol misuse in 1997/98.

This excludes indirect Government expenditure on substance misuse services in Gwynedd. The Welsh Drug and Alcohol Unit for example, which is funded by the Welsh Office, provides practical and administrative support throughout Wales to those involved in combating drug and alcohol misuse. The Welsh Office also provides grant funding to organisations such as Cyngor Alcohol Information Services which is based in Conwy but provides a range of information, counselling, residential and treatment services for persons in North Wales experiencing alcohol and drug related harm.
