HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 c289W
Mr. Brake

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what is the budget for London Underground's current radio advertising campaign. [37857]

Ms Glenda Jackson

I understand that they are currently running a Family Travelcard promotion on the radio, the total cost of which is £80,780.

Sir Raymond Powell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what estimate he has made of whether the total cost of the proposed arrangements for the funding of London Underground set out in his oral statement of 20 March 1998,Official Report, columns 1539–42, will be greater or less than the cost of continuing public support. [38143]

Ms Glenda Jackson

We believe that our proposal for a public-private partnership will offer better value for money than continued reliance on public sector funding, and will mean that London Underground's investment needs will be addressed more quickly, and at less cost to the public purse, than would otherwise be possible. The need for ongoing subsidy, if any, will be established only when bids have been received and evaluated.
