To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many beneficiaries there are currently receiving industrial injuries disablement benefit. [37513]

The information is not available in the format requested. Such information as is available is as follows. At 5 April 1997, it is estimated that there were 262,300 Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit assessments in payment. This figure will include some people who receive benefit for more than one injury or disease.

Expenditure on Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit in 1996–97 was £685 million.

The latest estimate for expenditure on Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit in 1997–98 is £695 million.

The figures for 1996–97 are consistent with the appropriation accounts for that year and those for 1997–98 have been taken from the 1998 Social Security Departmental Report.
