HC Deb 08 April 1998 vol 310 c339W
Mr. Cox

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many(a) men and (b) women are registered disabled in England and Wales. [36581]

Mr. Alan Howarth

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 repealed the registration provisions of the 1944 Disabled Persons (Employment) Act. Access to the programmes offered by my Department for people with disabilities does not depend on any process of registration.

Mr. Burstow

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list the indicators that will be used to measure the targets for(a) an increase in the number of disabled people able to work and (b) a reduction in discrimination against disabled people as proposed in the green paper. [37995]

Mr. Alan Howarth

Setting out proposed success measures and inviting debate on them is an unprecedented break with the past and a key step forward. The Government have phrased them in broad terms initially to generate a wide debate. We would welcome views on how they should be refined.
