To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he expects to publish the independent report on cross-border shopping. [37982]

Following my right hon. Friend the Chancellor's announcement of a review of alcohol and tobacco fraud in his Budget of 2 July 1997 I asked Customs to undertake the review consulting widely with the trade, and other public bodies and interested parties.

As to the publication of the outcome of the review, I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to right hon. Member for Wells (Mr. Heathcoat-Amory) on 25 March 1998, Official Report, column 202.
