§ Mr. BoswellTo ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what estimate he has made of the total annual contribution of cultural activities to gross domestic product in each of the last three years. [37129]
§ Mr. Chris Smith[holding answer 31 March 1998]The current total revenues of the UK creative industries are estimated at over £55 billion. There are no reliable historic data on the contribution of the creative industries to gross domestic product. In 1995, the last year for which such information is available, the contribution net of inputs ("valued added") was around £25 billion, approaching 4 per cent. of gross domestic product.
