§ Mr. Andrew SmithThe Government strongly support the International Labour Organisation's proposal for a new Convention to eliminate the most intolerable forms of child labour. The UK will be actively involved in negotiating the new instrument during the ILO Conferences in 1998 and 1999. The UK has already committed £200,000 to the ILO's International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) to finance work in Asia to combat trafficking of women and children. The Government will announce further contributions to this worthwhile programme in the coming weeks.
