HL Deb 06 April 1998 vol 588 cc109-14WA
Lord Pilkington of Oxenford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish data for Wales giving, for comprehensive schools, independent schools, sixth form colleges, other further education funding council schools and colleges, all state institutions and all institutions, the number of candidates and the average A-level points per student taking each of the subjects physics, chemistry and biology at A-level in each of the years 1993 to 1997, showing data separately for students taking either GCSE Double Award Science or the respective GCSE separate science physics, chemistry or biology and giving in each case the average GCSE points per student for either GCSE Double Award Science or the respective GCSE separate science physics, chemistry or biology and the average GCSE points per subject entry per student and including, for each category of institution, the number of institutions. [HL1232]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

Information on the GCSEs taken by A-level candidates is not available centrally. The following table gives the number of entries and the average point score for A-level entries in physics, chemistry and biology.

(a) A-level point score is calculated as follows:

A-levels: Grade A = 10 points, B = 8, C = 6, D = 4, E = 2. AS-levels: Grade A = 5 points, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1.

(b) Institutions with A- or AS-level entries.

(c) Entries for AS count as half.

Lord Pilkington of Oxenford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will publish data for Wales for the number and percentage of A-level entrants and the percentage of the 18 year old cohort obtaining two or more A-levels, three or more A-levels and three or more A-levels at A grade for comprehensive schools, independent schools, sixth form colleges, other further education schools and colleges, all state institutions and all institutions, in each of the years 1960 to 1997, showing data separately for boys, girls and all students and including, for each category of institution, the number of institutions and the number of students entering for two or more A-levels. [HL1235]

Lord Williams of Mostyn

The information requested is only available centrally from 1995 onwards. The number of students obtaining three or more A-levels at grade A is not available without incurring a disproportionate cost. The available information is given in the following tables.
