HC Deb 01 April 1998 vol 309 c565W
Mr. Love

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what steps she is taking to strengthen the rules covering doorstep sales methods by companies selling gas. [35099]

Mr. Battle

The Government believe that consumers who are sold gas contracts on the doorstep should have proper protection. Following concerns over the misleading marketing techniques adopted by some gas suppliers, the Office of Gas Supply introduced a new licence condition to regulate such activities at the end of January.

Among other things, the new condition includes rules on the proper selection and training of sales staff who are in direct contact with domestic customers, auditing of sales activities, schemes for paying compensation, and a ban on gas suppliers using agents who ask for payment in advance of arranging a supply of gas.

I am keeping the situation, including the need for further action, under review.
