HC Deb 27 October 1997 vol 299 c712W
Jane Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will introduce a fuel tax exemption for those disabled people who have motability vehicles. [12299]

Ms Glenda Jackson

There are no plans to introduce a fuel tax exemption for those disabled people who have motability vehicles. Such a measure would be administratively expensive and impractical, and there are better ways of assisting disabled people with their transport costs. The main way is through the Government's provision of the disability living allowance which was introduced in 1992 to help people with the extra costs which arise from their care and mobility needs. DLA is increased every year, by law, by the rate of inflation, as measured by the movement in the retail prices index which takes account of the cost of petrol as well as the cost of taxi fares and other motoring costs.
