§ Ms Quin[holding answer 24 November 1997]: The United Kingdom is not a member of Schengen and under the Treaty of Amsterdam the Schengen acquis will apply as a matter of European law in all member states except the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The Treaty of Amsterdam provides for the 542W United Kingdom to participate in provisions of the Schengen acquis; no decision has been taken about possible United Kingdom participation.
