To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what arrangements have been made to involve the voluntary sector in the welfare-to-work programme in(a) Clwyd, South, (b) North Wales, (c) South Wales, (d) West Wales and (e) Wales; and if he will make a statement. [16502]

1. Mr. Hain

Within the Government's welfare-to-work programme, activity in Wales has concentrated on:-

  1. 1. New Deal for 18–24 year olds;
  2. 2. New Deal for lone parents;
  3. 3. Employment Zones

New Deal for 18–24 year olds

The voluntary sector has played an active role in the design and planning of the New Deal for 18–24 year olds in Wales.

Mr. Hain

Targets for the number of student places to be funded through the Welsh Funding councils in 2000–01 will be set in the light of future resource decisions taken by the Department and the Welsh Assembly. Further places will be funded by students themselves and through Government initiatives such as the New Deal.
