HC Deb 25 November 1997 vol 301 cc480-1W
Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the arrangements to ensure that the proposed European Troika visit to East Timor is able to hold private meetings with persons(a) in Dili and (b) in rural areas. [15986]

Mr. Fatchett

We aim for the Troika Ambassadors to talk to a wide range of people to get as complete a picture as possible of the situation. Detailed arrangements will be worked out in conjunction with our EU partners.

Dr. Tonge

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Indonesian Government on the recommendation by the United Nations Human Rights Commission that the United Nations Rapporteur on Torture be invited to visit East Timor, in time for him to report to the meeting of the Commission in April 1998. [15987]

Mr. Fatchett

We continue to encourage the Indonesian Government to implement the resolution of the UN Commission on Human Rights 1997.

Dr. Tonge

Mr. Fatchett

There are no efforts by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to deploy an on-site human rights presence in East Timor.
