HL Deb 20 November 1997 vol 583 c90WA
Lord Hogg of Cumbernauld

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their policy on religious education in non-denominational schools in Scotland.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Scottish Office (Lord Sewel)

Government policy for religious education in non-denominational schools in Scotland is set out in the Scottish Office Education Department Circular 6/91. This circular states that religious education is a valid and important educational experience at all stages of primary and secondary education. Religious education in schools should be based on Christianity as the main religious tradition of Scotland but should also take account of the teaching and practice of other principal religious traditions.
