§ Ms Quin[holding answer 3 November 1997]: Research published last year by the Institute of Psychiatry following a survey of the prevalence of mental disorder among the remand prison population of England and Wales for the Prison Service considered that 66 per cent. of the adult males, 53 per cent. of the young men and 77 per cent. of the women could be diagnosed as suffering from some form of mental disorder, including harmful or dependent substance misuse.
