To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total cost to date of external consultancies associated with the specification of the proposed private finance initiative contract at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh NHS trust; and from which budgets these costs have been met. [12746]

[holding answer 27 October 1997]: The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh NHS Trust has to date incurred £3.4 million for fees for external advice in connection with the New Royal Infirmary PFI project as detailed in the table. The costs have been met by the Trust from its own resources, including non-recurring revenue grants from The Scottish Office.
