HC Deb 22 May 1997 vol 294 c122W
21. Mr. Colvin

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is his target for reducing class sizes in schools and his estimate of the cost. [212]

Mr. Byers

Our pledge is to phase out classes of over 30 for all five, six and seven year olds during the lifetime of this Parliament. Detailed costs will depend on how LEAs and schools implement reductions in class sizes.

Mr. Streeter

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what estimate he has made of the cost of reducing class sizes to 30 or below for five, six and seven-year-olds. [985]

Mr. Byers

The detailed costs of achieving that objective will depend on how LEAs and schools implement those reductions.

Mr. McNamara
