HC Deb 22 May 1997 vol 294 cc118-9W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proposals he has to increase the number of ethnic minority employees in the Treasury. [729]

Mrs. Liddell

All recruitment to the Treasury is done on merit on the basis of fair and open competition. The Treasury participates in the Windsor Fellowship in an attempt to attract applications from suitably qualified ethnic minority candidates, and advertise itself as an equal opportunities employer.

Mr. Vaz

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many civil servants, of each grade, in the Treasury, were of Asian origin, on 5 May. [728]

Mrs. Liddell

Following the introduction on 1 April 1996 of a new departmental pay and grading structure all Treasury staff transferred from the old civil service grades, into new broad pay ranges. As at 5 May 1997, the number of staff in post in the Treasury who declared themselves to be of Asian origin was 50, distributed within the Pay Ranges as follows:

Pay range Staff of Asian origin within pay range
A 9
B 33
C 4
D 1
E 2
F 1
G 0
H 0
