HC Deb 21 May 1997 vol 294 c79W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what proposals he has to reduce the number of deaths(a) resulting from the use of medicinal drugs and (b) of those addicted to medicines. [107]

Ms Jowell

No medicine which is effective is completely risk-free. Therefore, there are well-established systems for licensing and monitoring the safety of all medicines available in the United Kingdom. These ensure the benefits of medicines outweigh any risks and prevent users coming to unnecessary harm.

The clinical needs of the patient can be decided only by the doctor treating the patient at the time. To assist doctors, the Department of Health provides and funds a full range of educational information and advice. The Medicines Control Agency alerts health professionals to unexpected drug hazards.

These measures are kept under regular review and we will take action as appropriate to maintain necessary safeguards to protect public health.
