The information requested falls within the responsibility of the chief executive of the Office for National Statistics. I have asked him to arrange for a reply to be given.

Letter from Tim Holt to Sir John Stanley, dated 21 March 1997: The Chancellor of the Exchequer has asked me to reply as the Director of the Office for National Statistics to your recent questions on the rates of increase in real disposable income. I have assumed that the question relates to real disposable income for the economy as a whole. The increase in real personal disposable income between 1974 and 1979 was 11.4 per cent and from 1979 to 1995 (the latest available information) the increase was 45.5 per cent. The equivalent changes at annual rates are 2.2. per cent. and 2.4 per cent. respectively. Information on real personal disposable income is published annually in table 4.1 of the ONS publication United Kingdom National Accounts, the Blue Book and estimates of the percentage changes at annual rates in table 16.12. This information is also held on the ONS database. These sources are available in the House of Commons Library.
