HL Deb 17 March 1997 vol 579 c47WA
Lord Merrivale

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they remain committed to the right of self-determination for the Gibraltarian people and how they propose to give effect to this right in the light of the provisions of the UN Charter, General Assembly Resolutions on decolonisation and the Treaty of Utrecht.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

Our position remains unchanged. We support the right of self-determination reflecting the wishes of the people concerned, and exercised in accordance with the other principles and rights in the UN Charter as well as other treaty obligations. In the case of Gibraltar, as we have stated on many occasions, that includes the Treaty of Utrecht.
