411WThe Home Secretary has asked me, in the absence of the Director General from the office, to reply to your three recent Questions about inmate numbers and costs at Her Majesty's Young Offender Institution Colchester.On Tuesday 11 March there were 11 young offenders at Colchester, all of whom were members of the first intake which arrived at the young offender institution on the day it opened, 20 February. Further intakes will bring the population to 32.The current estimated running costs for the financial year 1 April 1997 to 30 March 1998 are £1,006,000 which is equivalent to an average weekly rate of £19,293. These figures exclude an estimated charge of £114,292 made by the Ministry of Defence for rental of the accommodation and a contribution in lieu of rates.
