To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what estimate he has made of the total value in real terms of assets sold by old people to pay for residential care in each of the last five years; and what in each case was the percentage change from the previous year; [19370]

(2) how many people, having sold their assets to pay for residential care, exhausted their funds in the last year for which figures are available; and how many such people remained in the same residential home; [19372]

(3) how many people sold their homes to pay for residential care in 1995–96; and what estimate he has made of the number who will have done so in 1996–97. [19371]
