To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what was the pupil to teacher ratio in(a) primary and (b) secondary schools in each of the last five years. [19678]

I refer the hon. Member to statistical bulletin 11/96 which shows pupil teacher ratios in maintained schools by local education authority area in England in January 1996. A copy of the bulletin is in the Library.
