To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which public health experts were members of SEAC during the chairmanship of Dr. Tyrell; and what were his Department's sources of public health advice during that period. [18133]

The Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee was set up under the chairmanship of Dr. Tyrrell on 3 April 1990. He remained chairman until 4 October 1995.

The following members of SEAC, during the chairmanship of Dr. Tyrrell, were medical doctors.

Dr. David Tyrrell FRCP., FRCPath., FRS. Professor I. Allen MD, Dsc., FRCPath., FRCPI., FRCPSG., FRCPE. Professor J. Pattison DM., BM., Bch., FRCPath. Dr. R. G. Will MA (Camb), MD., MB., Bch., MRCP (UK).

The committee was set up to advise both the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Department of Health. The main sources of public health advice during Dr. Tyrrell's chairmanship were SEAC, the Department of Health and the Government's chief medical Officer and the national CJD surveillance unit, set up in May 1990.
