To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many food and agriculture scientists were employed in Government-funded food and science establishments by his Department on(a) the most recent date available and (b) 31 March (i) 1995, (ii) 1990, (iii) 1985 and (iv) 1980. [18178]

[holding answer 5 March 1997]: The Scottish Office currently employs 86 scientists at the Scottish Agricultural Science Agency and 159 scientists in the fisheries research services. They work in a wide range of scientific areas, including food and agriculture. Information for the earlier years is no longer held centrally.
