Mr. Cash

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what directions he has given in respect of(a) the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and (b) the Roslin Institute since the inception of the Roslin Institute; and if he will place copies of these directions in the Library. [18882]

Mr. Ian Taylor

No specific directions have been given. A number of more general announcements have impinged upon the BBSRC and Roslin, including the annual announcements of the allocation of the science budget and the recent announcement of the outcome of the prior options reviews. These are all recorded in theOfficial Journal.

To ask the President of the Board of Trade how much public money has been provided to the Roslin Institute in each year since its inception. [18964]

Mr. Taylor

The Roslin Institute was established on 1 April 1993 as a result of the restructuring of the former Institute of Animal Physiology and Genetics Research. It was constituted under the royal charter of the Agricultural and Food Research Council, which subsequently became the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. On 1 April 1995, the Roslin Institute was reconstituted as a company limited by guarantee and was recognised as a Scottish charity.
