HC Deb 10 March 1997 vol 292 c27W
29. Mr. Waterson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what proposals he has to improve road links in East Sussex. [17781]

Mr. Watts

We are supporting a number of road proposals in East Sussex, at an estimated cost of £205 million. These include three schemes to improve the A27 between Lewes and Polegate; and A27 Southerham to Beddingham improvement; the A27 Selmeston bypass and the A27 Wilmington bypass, at an estimated cost of £53 million collectively. In addition, there is the A27 Polegate bypass which is included in The Weald and Downland design, build, finance and operate project and has an estimated cost of £17.8 million.

Bypasses for Bexhill and Hastings are also included in this DBFO project. These are, with their estimated costs; the A259 Bexhill and Hastings western bypass, £68.2 million; the A259 Hastings eastern bypass, £20.6 million; and the A259 Pevensey to Bexhill improvement at £9.6 million. The programme achieves a balance between promoting economic development in East Sussex and protecting the area's environment.
