To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will place in rank order the number and percentage of school pupils who are(a) statemented and (b) awaiting statementing in each local education authority in England. [19304]

The following table shows the number of school pupils with statements, and this number expressed as a percentage of total school pupils, attending school in each local education authority in January 1996. Figures are taken from returns to the Department in the annual schools census. For any particular LEA, they will include pupils with statements placed by other LEAs, and exclude such pupils placed by the LEA in other LEA areas. Information on numbers of pupils awaiting statements is not collected centrally.
