To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients, by region, were readmitted to hospital within one month of their discharge in the last three years. [18729]

Mr. Horam

Since April 1996, the NHS executive has collected, routinely, information on patients aged 75 and over who are readmitted as an emergency within 28 days of discharge. Information collected for quarter three for 1996–97 is shown in the table. Information on those aged less than 75 is not available centrally.
