HC Deb 10 March 1997 vol 292 c108W
Mr. Hinchliffe

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what financial provision has been made for the costs of caring for those affected by new variant CJD; over what period these costs are expected to be incurred; and if he will make a statement. [18254]

Mr. Horam

No specific financial provision has been made for the care of patients affected by new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. Patients with nvCJD, which remains a very rare condition, should receive all clinically necessary health and social services as decided by those responsible for their care and the authorities locally. It is still too soon to make any prediction about future numbers of cases and consequent costs.
