To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if she will list by decile the household income of parents of students in the assisted places scheme for the most recent year for which figures are available. [19303]

The information is not readily available in the form requested. The following table gives figures, by decile and in bands to the nearest £250, relating to the relevant incomes of parents of pupils receiving help under the assisted places scheme in England in academic year 1995–96. Over 43 per cent. of assisted pupils in that year received a free place because their parents' income fell below the threshold of £9,572 for full fee remission.
