HC Deb 04 March 1997 vol 291 c600W
Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what percentage of timber used in the United Kingdom came from certified sustainable sources in each year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement. [18018]

Mr. Clappison

This information is not available.

The Government are exploring ways in which voluntary certification of timber could both reflect and encourage sustainable forest management, and support the recently agreed proposals for action on this set out in the final report of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development's intergovernmental panel on forests. The Government will now be pressing for effective international action to implement the IPF's proposals.
